Sound familiar? Of course it does. Its from An Imperial Affliction. Duh.

I heard about this one a long time ago, about 2011 or so, I guess, don’t remember exactly. They featured a review of it on the “Number One Youth’s Magazine of Bangladesh” apparently. That thing used to be awesome. But anyway, the review was well written, in terms of language. But, it did not make me want to read it.

What made me want to read it was this:

Peer Pressure. Actually not so much peer pressure as the third wheel feeling. Two of my best friends had read it. And they kept talking about it all over the place. It made that much more sense to read it since its movie adaptation was coming out at the time. And even though I knew I probably would never watch it, I wanted to know what it was all about.

I’m going to assume that you’ve read the book by now. If you haven’t, prepare for spoilers.

My first impression of it was this. The narration read different. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting a guy to be writing from a 16-year-old girl’s point of view. She turned out to have a different sort of appeal. She was, as Augustus Waters says, “You are so busy being you that you have no idea how utterly unprecedented you are.” And that just did it for me. Gus was something of a nod to difference as well. That guy, despite knowing that he didn’t have time, made sure to let us know, it never hurts t be optimistic. I live by his uplifting quotes to this day.

And he has a cool name. Literally.

Even though the writing was humorous till the very end, it did make me cry when he died. And references to AIA were very touching as well. I really haven’t read another book written from a POV such as this that goes like this. And I know what the big question is now. Have I read the other books by John Green?

No, I haven’t. Not yet, at least. Looking For Alaska is on my list next. But there are a bunch of classics that I have to read before that. So new school will have to wait old school out.
